Effective January 1, 2016, banks must make application for branches to the Banking Department as well as their primary federal regulatory.

The Banking Department and the primary federal regulator must approve a branch application before construction begins on a new branch location according to Memorandum dated January 1, 2016 from the Superintendent of Banks to Chief Executive Officers of Alabama State-Chartered Banks.
